You know that feeling when you walk into a beautifully styled bedroom and it just looks finished? Like every element was chosen with intention? A bedhead cushion can be the piece that pulls it all together.

The Short Answer

A bedhead cushion is a long, styled cushion that sits behind your pillows, spanning the width of your bed. It creates a visual anchor at the head of your bed, adds texture and warmth to the room, and gives you somewhere genuinely comfortable to lean when you're reading or scrolling.

It's the difference between a bed that looks functional and one that looks like you actually thought about it.

Why I Created Them

I'm an interior designer based in South Australia. I started Arlem because I wanted to make something that looks good, feels great, and doesn't cost the earth.

Traditional headboards make a statement, but they can dominate a room. I wanted something that adds the same visual weight and polish, but with a softer, more inviting presence. Something that makes a bedroom feel like home, not a furniture showroom.

So I designed the bedhead cushion to solve that. Each one is handmade, from cutting and sewing the fabric to the filling and finishing. I use quality fabrics and vegan, eco-friendly inserts. I care about the details because I want to make cushions that last, not disposable homewares.

What They Bring to a Space

Texture

Linen and bouclé fabrics add depth and dimension that flat surfaces simply can't. Your bedroom gains visual interest without adding clutter.

Visual Balance

The horizontal line grounds your pillows and bedding. It frames your bed and gives the eye somewhere to land.

Warmth

Soft furnishings make a room feel lived-in, not sterile. A bedhead cushion brings that inviting, cosy quality to even the most minimal spaces.

Intentionality

It signals that your bedroom was styled, not just assembled. One piece that says you thought about the details.

The "No Headboard" Solution

If your bed doesn't have a headboard, you've probably noticed the problem. The bed looks like it's floating. There's no definition at the top of the mattress, and no matter how nicely you arrange your pillows, something feels off.

A bedhead cushion fixes this immediately. It creates a backdrop for your pillows, defines the sleeping space, and makes the whole setup look intentional rather than incomplete.

With an Existing Headboard

Already have a headboard? A bedhead cushion isn't redundant. It actually elevates what you've got.

Wooden and metal headboards look great, but they're hard and cold to lean against. Layering a cushion in front softens the look, adds texture, and makes your bed feel more inviting. It's like adding throw pillows to a sofa. The furniture underneath does its job, but the soft furnishings make it feel like home.

Getting the Size Right

Our bedhead cushions are made slightly wider than standard bed sizes so they fit perfectly with just a touch of overhang on each side. This creates a proper visual frame rather than leaving awkward gaps.

We make them in King, Queen, and Double sizes to match Australian bed dimensions. When you order, just select the size that matches your mattress.

How to Style It

1

Let it span

Position the cushion centrally so it spans the full width of your bed. Don't push it to one side.

2

Layer thoughtfully

Euro shams go in front of the bedhead cushion, then your sleeping pillows. Add decorative cushions if you want that editorial feel.

3

Keep colours cohesive

The bedhead cushion is your backdrop. It should complement your bedding, not compete with it. Neutrals work with almost everything.

Neutral tones let your bedding and accessories do the talking.

Actually Comfortable

A bedhead cushion isn't just about how your room looks. If you read in bed, watch TV, or scroll through your phone before sleep, you know the pillow-stacking struggle. Regular pillows compress, slide down, and leave you slouching.

A bedhead cushion stays put and supports your back properly. Your bed becomes a nicer place to spend time, not just a place to sleep.

The Bottom Line

A bedhead cushion finishes your bed, adds texture to your bedroom, and gives you somewhere comfortable to sit. It works with a headboard or without. And unlike a traditional headboard, you can take it with you when you move.

I designed these from scratch because nothing like them existed. Each one is handmade by me in South Australia, from premium fabrics, with free shipping Australia-wide.
